5 Tips on Sun Protection For Kids
We all know how intense the typical Malaysian sunny day can be, that’s why we reserve the evenings or early mornings to head to the park or playground with our young ones!
Besides the heat, did you know that excessive UV rays can cause sunburns & even more serious skin diseases later on in children? It takes an average of 15 minutes under the afternoon sun to develop sunburns without any form of skin protection.
Being located at the equator, Malaysia receives abundant sunshine and high-intensity solar radiation all-year round. If you’re a parent to more active kids, don’t restrict them from having fun in the sun - here are some ways to protect them while enjoying the great outdoors:
Follow These Simple Steps:
Avoid High-Intensity Hours - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is usually when sunlight is the strongest. Besides exposure to more intense UVB rays, there’s also a risk of heatstroke during long periods of play outside. Schedule playtime either in the early morning or late afternoon to be safe!
Use Sunscreen - Be it children or adults, everyone should apply sunscreen generously when outdoors. An SPF 15+ product can extend your protection in the sun by 15 times compared to doing without it. Most sunscreen is also generally safe for babies OVER 6 months of age - but do check with a dermatologist as babies tend to have sensitive skin.
Wear Protective Clothing - besides hats and shades, the clothing we wear can be another form of protection against UV rays. Look out for the UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of your kids clothes to see how protected they are against harmful UVA / UVB rays.
Curiosity makes all our kids and baby apparel with UV Protection certified material, with an average UPF 40-50+ rating for each item. That’s about 40 to 50 times longer playtime in the sun for your little one! Find a Shady Spot - Whether at play or on a picnic, find a sheltered spot under some trees or a roofed area to reduce the direct rays reaching your skin. It can be a good few degrees cooler too!
Start Protecting Them Early - UV rays do not discriminate between children & adults. Studies show that children who are exposed to high levels of UV radiation have a much higher risk of developing accelerated skin ageing & diseases like skin cancer later on in life. Educate them on the importance of sun protection, and equip them with the proper protection today.
